Happy Memorial Day 09

This is Memorial Weekend, with Monday being Memorial Day.

Most Americans have forgotten about the sacrifices made in WW I , WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and now in Iraq. I haven't forgotten. My father and best friend in real life are veterans.

I may or may not post until Monday night- just taking time to chill, go to some picnics and BBQ;'s with family and neighbors- anything but shop at the mall. And think for a while about the men and women who gave their lives, so I could live in a free country. Thank you all.

I never realized USA had two days during the year for remembering "men and women who died while in the military service". May (last Monday of May) and Nov 11. Memorial day was started first in the year 1868.

Mark, pretty interesting, huh? But Memorial day, they tend to put the flags on graves, they don't do that in November, maybe because the ground might be too hard.

1868?
I thought it was in the twenty century!

Nov 11th used to be called Armistice day. It was to celebrate the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front in WWI at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

HI ANA!

@D Bunker- isn't that where "All Quiet on the Western Front" came from?

Hi D. Bunker,
I believe that in Europe they still have the Armistice day.

Susan,
Bark, bark... meowwwwwwwwwwwww!

I like the cartoons—thanks for sharing! In addition to my dad (WWII), 3 of my sons and 1 son-in-law either are or have served in the military. Men like them should be our true American Idols. (OK, I'm getting off my soapbox.)

Thank you so much for your sentiment! We are a military family and my husband returned from Iraq with PTSD.
I wish people would stop and think when they say "Happy Memorial Day"... I know they mean well, but that statement haunts my husband when he thinks of his fallen comrades.
