When I was a child, the fact that two pandas in the Chapultepec zoo managed to breed and have an offspring was hailed as a formidable event. I think that the reason for this is that, prior to that birth, there hadn't been any successful reproduction of pandas in captivity outside of China; so it was considered a matter of national pride the fact that the Zoo caretakers had come up with this special diet that had been decisive in the success of the panda's gestation.
They named the panda Towi, and it was the main attraction at the Chapultepec zoo for a long time.
Goddamned panda even had its own song, for crying out loud —hear it at your own risk!! ;-)

Isn't it amazing how the baby is so tiny-- only a quarter of a pound?!?
